With much anticipation, I watched the film The Intern written and directed by Nancy Meyers who gave us movies like, The Holiday, It's Complicated and my all time favorite, Something's Gotta Give. Not only do I enjoy escaping reality to indulge in a grown up version chick flick, I love the on screen interior spaces. This is what Nancy Meyers does best and I was as always pleasantly inspired!
While watching the film, I couldn't help but notice the lighting throughout Jules's Brooklyn brownstone. A beautiful Lindsey Adelman chandelier above the dining table, Aerin Lauder wall sconces placed on either side of her bed. Which, by the way looked so comfortable, it's making me question re-doing my bedding at home. The best way I can describe it, is it was like the bed was whipped up in linen.
What I'm finding today in the interior design world and witnessed in the film was carefully collected mementos, heirlooms, travelled treasures purchased over time to create a real 'lived in', relaxed and personalized space. The juxtaposition of traditional architecture with young modern furnishings was inspiring. I believe you should only buy furnishings and accessories you love...whether in your travels or at home to furnish your space. Homes are more and more becoming sanctuaries, it's not just your bathroom that is a sanctuary anymore. The entire space is becoming this way.
Each home in a natural way reflect it's owner and we should be surrounded by everything that we love and cherish. It doesn't matter if things aren't perfect and don't match because in a way that's just like life. And just in life, what great stories we can tell about our interiors...
